we have different ethnic group in Nigeria. There are three major ethnic group, part of which is yoruba. A naming ceremony is a event at which a new born baby is given a name. The naming ceremony is done when the child is eight days old by the yorubas. The naming ceremony is taken importantly because the yorubas believe that a child lives out the meaning of his/her name.

Names are mostly chosen according to the family circumstances before the birth of the child. The ceremony is done at the family house. On the day of the ceremony, the oldest family member is given the responsibility of performing the ceremony. There are important items used that day to bless the child, to express a hope or path to a successful life.

1.water - water has no enemy because no one can live without water.
The child will never be thirsty in life and no enemy will slow down its growth.

2 .Honey - honey is always sweet,no one licks it and spit it away. It is used as sweetener in food.
The child life will be sweet and happy.

3 . palm oil - it is used to prevent rust, it is also used to soothe the body .
The child will live an easy life, a life in love and no friction.

4 . kola nut - kola nut is chewed and then spit out.
The child will repel evil.

5 .Bitter kola - out of all kola, bitter kola lasts a very long time.
The child will live for a very long years.

6 . pepper - pepper has many seeds within the fruit.
The child will have a fruitful life and lots of children.

7 . Salt - the salt is added to food to give it taste and to preserve food.
The child's life will not be ordinary, it will be full of favour, happiness,e,t,c. The child will preserve all that is good.

Names are given to the child after this process by the family members (the grandparents of both side, father, mother, uncles ,e,t,c.) All the names are called out and then repeated by the community. There is a lot of feasting and merry making after all.
