Developed with funding from the EU, the PortLiner electric barges will disrupt the container movement industry in Europe. More than 70% of freight is currently transported by diesel trucks. The potentially unmanned electric barges will vastly reduce the reliance on these trucks and also reduce significant levels of harmful emissions.
Dubbed the "Teslas of the Canals", these barges will be powered by batteries charged on shore by a sustainable energy provider. Depending on the bridge clearance height available, a flexible configuration of containers can be transported. When the project is fully rolled out, up to 23,000 diesel trucks may be taken off the roads. This could see a reduction of 18,000 tonnes of CO2 annually!
Concrete steps are being taken to mitigate climate change problems with the significant reduction of emissions with these electric barges.
