evading extinguishers

are extinguishers used when you "burn out"?

I've had one of those odd days again, tried taking a break from scrobble.life stuff as the scrobble youtube matchmaking was giving me headaches, not cause it's hard to understand really but it's just a lot of moving parts where you change one thing and another thing becomes worse, starting to think we should probably not have centered the frontpage of /music around it, but whatever at this point as long as it works for majority of the scrobbles. Maybe we can have scrobblers edit them site-wide if they care enough at some point manually and figure out a way to prevent misuse.

I decided I wanted to do some image generation, but looking at most platforms and their "subscription" models and upfront costs etc I was like meh, maybe let's just check what local versions exist these days and risk my gpu, can more things go wrong at this point? let's find out.

turns out my gpu was already faulty, lmao.

like, claude found that a small portion of my 4090's vram was faulty and would produce random flips on bits, like, yeah it went over my head exactly what it was doing wrong but it was resulting in images going black because it generated garbage when hitting those parts of the vram.

I, and claude, for many hours thought it was the models that weren't compatible with each other or something, then we thought maybe it's my nvidia driver, then we went back a few drivers on both nvidia and the local image models, tested things back and forth, many gigabytes of downloads later claude figured out that it's vram. I also tested it using vulkan and it showed the same fault on the same place.

This made me wonder if that's what's been causing some weird artifacts at times, I always thought it was the lower RAM my pc has (32gb).

What's crazier is that claude built a guard, first for the local model only, so it'd locate and occupy the affected vram, at first it only did it in a 3gb cluster, meaning I couldn't use 3/24 gb of vram, but later it asked if it wanted me to narrow it down some more and I was like, sure if it can be more precise. Turns out it could, 82x more, freeing up more vram, not that I really needed it at this point but why not.

The even crazier/better part was that it asked if it wanted me to build a guard for all things on my pc, i.e. if I run games or (it remembered that holozing mmo had crashed in unity a few times to unknown error and said there's a non-zero chance it could be cause of this) other projects, etc, so I was like sure.

It did recommend me to check on my warranty however because this was a definite cause for return, but hearing how ASUS has treated some of their customers basically saying "yeah we don't have any gpu's so sucks for you", I'm not really sure if I wanna go that route, but I'll check if it's still under the 3 y warranty just in case. Who knows, maybe they do have some 4090s stacked away somewhere that aren't faulty or already running AI inference in databases.

Anyway, kind of excited now to re-test some games that have had weird crashes in the past and/or check for those artifacts that used to pop up, but I also spent some time generating some images with qwen. I installed qwen-image (text to image), qwen-image-edit (for references/consistency) and then some other model I don't remember the name now for something else I didn't get to test yet. It's been a long night of downloading/installing/deleting/redownloading/uninstalling/redownloading/installing/deleting/redownloading/reinstalling etc.
