... My birthday?
Good afternoon,
We can pick up right where we left off! It was my birthday and I had taken the day off from subbing to spend some time with friends. I was right in the middle of a serious "22" by Taylor Swift (even though I am 23) jam session when I received a call. Normally I would have let this go to voicemail (given the circumstances) however, something deep within me told me I needed to answer this call. I turned the radio down and told my friends that they needed to be quiet.
On the other end of the phone was a principal of a school I had never heard of in the ISD that I wanted to be in. In complete shock, I was able to say that I wanted to set up an interview for the next day. She wanted me to go in that day if I had time but seeing I was in a different city I did not see it fit to try to make it before 5 o'clock. Recall me saying that I went to a private Christian college, well they prayed with me that night to help ease my anxiety. What kind of school calls 3 1/2 months into the year looking for a teacher?
(Sidenote: another thing that held me back from teaching is the fact that I am not bilingual. I do speak Spanish but, not enough to teach in it!) I was anxious to say the least. I could not believe that I was about to prepare for an interview to take over a class! Call it luck, God, or magic, but this was definitely odd! Let me explain. The past summer (besides going to hiring fairs) I tutored three 5th grade students in math and science to prepare them for the standardized test (YUCK) that they would be taking the upcoming year. Which means I spent a lot of time in the curriculum for those subjects. Ok, back to the story!
I went into the interview a bit blindsided, but come to find out that the position I was going to be filling was for 5th grade math and science! Shocked, I was able to tell the principle that I had spent a lot of time with the curriculum the past summer doing test prep for students in the ISD and that I was familiar with it. We got along very well and I was even able to joke about my long distance relationship not hindering me from taking on after school activities (to which they did laugh thankfully). However, I knew the routine all to well and left not wanting to get my hopes up. They also told me there were three more teachers they were going to be interviewed that day.
Like any other human in the world I left and grabbed some food and went home and took a nap! Your girl was tiered from all of the stress! A few hours into my nap I was awake with a phone call...
Thanks for stopping by steemers!
Till next time,
The Anonymous Teacher
