How to Facebook
It's been in the news a lot, so by now most of us know that Facebook is following us everywhere.
But fear not! There are ways you can still use Facebook without giving up to much of your private data.
- Never install the app
Facebook apps, whatever you install them on, track way more than just your Facebook activity. Your contacts, phone numbers and even call history can all be tracked. So only use Facebook in a browser like Firefox, Chrome or Opera.
- Use a dedicated browser
Use another browser than the one you normally use, just for Facebook. Most devices offer you a choice, like Edge on windows 10, or chrome/firefox on Android. Use this other browser just for Facebook. That way it will be harder for Facebook to track your activity while browsing on other sites.
- Use Firefox
In my humble opinion there exists no better browser for regular internet browsing than Firefox. The settings allow you to deny tracking and with some extra extensions you can really beef up your safety.
- Privacy Badger
This handy and lightweight extension blocks most trackers on the web. No configuring, just install, forget and enjoy.
- NoScript
Websites have many other ways of tracking you than the use of trackers. Various scripts can be placed on websites that still let Facebook know that you where on that page. If you want to protect yourself from most of them, you will have to put in some extra work.
Noscript blocks al scripts on a website by default. The problem is that most websites use harmless scripts to make them work. So blocking these will stop some sites from working properly. So sites you know and trust that don't work, need to be white listed.
Click on the noscript icon, and allow the page you are currently on. You can do so permanently, or temporary. If elements of the site still won't work, try the other blocked urls listed by noscript temporarily until everything works.
Just make sure to never allow Facebook. If a site you want to work really needs to connect to Facebook, then try to use the site on the same browser you use for Facebook. But then realize that Facebook will know you've been on that page.
- Privacy settings on Facebook do not protect you from Facebook
Facebook's own privacy settings are great for managing what activity other Facebook users can or can't see. But Facebook does allow certain partners access to all of peoples posts and likes, even you have hide them from other Facebook users. So try to remind yourself of this when posting. Do you really want other people to see this? If not, than consider not posting it at all.
- Don't like everything
Everything you like with the button get added to your advertising profile. So before hitting that like button, contemplate if you would mind seeing ads for the thing your liking.
Using these tips will help minimize the data you share with Facebook.
Do you know of other good methods to still use Facebook but minimize your lost privacy?
