Summer in La Herradura

Greetings, dear readers. Where are you reading this from? How are you enjoying this summer? I live in a small beach town in southern Spain, La Herradura, in Andalusia. Since this community is all about summer vibes, in a previous article I wrote about the Saint John festival, which officially kicks off summer here where I live. It’s a nighttime celebration around a bonfire, where we burn a doll that represents everything we want to leave behind in our lives and open ourselves up to receiving new and good things. It’s my favorite event of the summer.https://peakd.com/hive-153943/@beaescribe/noche-de-san-juan-en-la-herradura-saint-john-night-in-la-herradura-spanish-english
The Rociero Choir's Concerts
Another event I really enjoy in the summer is the Rociero Choir’s concerts; I’m currently a member of the choir. We usually travel to other cities to participate in choir gatherings, visit nearby farmhouses, and perform at Masses. Among the members, there’s usually a festive spirit, good humor, and camaraderie—partly because of the style of music we sing, with guitars, clapping, and castanets; but also because most of the people in the group have been together for more than ten years, and some are family—sisters, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. For the group, singing is like a big family gathering, and even though I’ve only been with the group for a little over a year, I’ve managed to fit in and become part of that family-like, festive spirit.

The beach
During the summer, many of the activities I participate in come to a halt. In June, the Creative Writing workshop I currently lead was put on hold because several of the participants traveled outside of La Herradura—to visit other cities, to see family, or simply because summer brings a change in routines as the weather changes. This week, the book club I’m part of is also taking a break until after summer, and so is the Rociero Choir. This is the part of summer I don’t like. Since I don’t have a steady job, I’m left without the activities I enjoy most during the two months of summer—July and August. What’s left for me? The beach, packed with tourists.

tourists sunbathing on the beach

I imagine that many people would like to live near the beach, just like me, and they might wonder, “What’s he complaining about?” The thing is, it’s really nice to live near the beach in a small, quiet town. But all that changes in the summer, when tourists arrive from different regions of Spain and other countries. The town, which is quiet during other times of the year, becomes noisy, and its atmosphere changes completely.
In the summer, the first major change is the weather. While many tourists—especially those from northern Europe—enjoy the hot weather, it can be very overwhelming. Temperatures rise above 30 degrees Celsius; recently, it reached 36 degrees. If you’re not careful, you could almost faint, and if you stay in the sun too long without protection, you could get heatstroke. It’s a good idea to drink plenty of water and refreshing beverages and avoid spending too much time in the sun during the hottest part of the day, after noon.

But even at the start of summer, you can still enjoy the beach—it’s not too hot, and there aren’t too many people. The sea envelops you, brings you peace, cools you off when you dive in, and helps you disconnect from everything that’s on your mind. You grab an ice cream when you go for a walk and enjoy it just like you did as a child. You watch the sailboats pass by in the distance, as if they were little paper boats. Here are some photos I’d like to share with you of La Herradura Beach at the start of summer.

I can’t wrap up this article about summer without mentioning a feeling that shapes it, a vibe that makes it different. That feeling has taken hold of us Venezuelans who no longer live in our country, following the two earthquakes that have struck Venezuela. Even though we’re not there, it affects us—we have family and friends who have been affected both materially and emotionally. Two weeks have passed, and the tremors continue. That doesn’t stop me from going to the beach and enjoying the summer—which is why I’m able to write this article. But I’m neither indifferent nor cynical. That tragedy makes this a different kind of summer, without a doubt, and I need to express that as I conclude these lines. Because I don’t know how to comfort my people who are suffering, and even though I send aid to my sisters who live there and am in daily contact with them and other loved ones, it all feels insufficient.

El verano en La Herradura

Saludos, amigos lectores.

¿Qué me queda?

From my balcony 😀, with 32 degrees Celsius at half past ten in the evening 😂
But it feels good for me, there is a breeze and it's dry air which doesn't make you sweat. I had lessons for the whole afternoon, the last day of the intensive piano course I gave so now it will be less work. Already yesterday I went to the towm we used to live before we moved and spent my whole afternoon at the beach. I saw how many tourists there are indeed.
Btw, being a member of a choir is indeed like being in family, like in a big, happy, singing family :))
Thank you very much for your post @beaescribe ! 🤗
