Northern Roots

Wilderness canoeing has long been a passion of mine. Every summer a friend and I would find another Candian wilderness route to explore. This drawing was done following our first of three trips to the Gouin Reservoir about 300 miles north of Montreal. The reservoir was the result of massive flooding from hydro electric dams built on several rivers that drained the watershed. The result was massive numbers of dead spruce that washed up on the sandy beaches. True to character I couldn't resist using the dead fall in an artistic statement about the destructive folly of man. Planting the dead spruce roots up is a symbol of the price nature pays for the electrification of the south.
