Hard Times Tokens
Hard-times tokens are large cent-sized copper tokens. They where struck from about 1832 to 1843, and served as unofficial currency.
Due to the economic hardship and politcally charged presidential elections, this time period became known as the "Hard Times".
Because the US had an on going shortage of small change, these tokens where used in commerce and most examples are found to be in circulated condition.
The tokens of this period are divided into three main groups. The first consists of political propaganda for and against Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, the second of advertising pieces, and the third of cent look-alikes (Not Cents).
Hard Times tokens are collectible and usually affordable as coins or as political history.
