Jiro the Hero 🐢

Many of you already know our pet tortoise, Jiro. But I think it's only fair to give him a proper introduction.

2 years ago, Jiro arrived by mail from Arizona as a Valentine's day gift from @Marika. Nothing says "I love you" like a 60 year commitment. We decided to name him after our favorite sushi chef due to the uncanny resemblance.

Tortoises are a great pet for photographers as you never get a blurry photo. He's pretty intelligent and affectionate for a reptile. He's learned to climb up on our hands when he wants to get out of his home. Other skills on his resume include the ability to take poops larger than his head. Not many animals hold that title 💩

We built him his own penthouse, complete with a UV light, heat lamp, and water feature. Due to his fearless climbing, he'll occasionally get flipped on his back, so we 3D-printed a raspi camera to keep an eye on him.

He's incredibly strong. Here he is lifting up his laser-cut castle... with his neck.

He mostly eats leafy greens, but occasionally he gets treated to a cherry tomato (we cut it in half for him after he glared at us).
