Haz siempre lo máximo que puedas – Aprovechando tus conocimientos y creatividad |Always do your very best – using your knowledge and creativity

Greetings to everyone, friends of the #EmpowerTalent community, with the topic you bring us every week – especially our dear @angelica7 – inviting us to write about: ‘Always do your very best’, an exercise to conclude the guide to Dr Miguel Ruiz’s book The Four Agreements for Writers, in which he explains that when a person sets out to give their all, many thoughts may cross their mind, but we’re sure that at the very least, there remains the certainty that you’ve given everything you possibly could, which brings a great sense of peace and satisfaction. Here’s my contribution:
As people, we’re often in pursuit of perfection; everyone tries to show their best mental, physical and emotional sides, as if in a struggle to correct all their flaws.
Perfectionism is like a role model
Perfectionism is like a role model for those of us who are always taking on too much, imposing an ideal of ‘what things ought to be or what we ought to be capable of doing’ – an ideal that sometimes bears no relation to who we are or what we actually need to do – and then trying to conform to that ideal.
I believe that striving for perfection is unrealistic and that we end up hurting ourselves, judging ourselves and distorting our true selves. Trying too hard, or not even trying at all, are two sides of the same coin when it comes to perfection, because, sadly, it is, first and foremost, a form of self-deception.
Perhaps, if our parents hadn’t expected us to be perfect, we wouldn’t feel the need to be perfect, because even when others don’t demand perfection from us, we demand it of ourselves.
In particular, some time ago I adopted this sort of behaviour in everything I did: at home, in my excessive care and attention; at work, striving to be an expert in my tasks; ensuring that none of my exhausting chores went unfinished; and doing everything at once to please myself and everyone around me.

Everything must go hand in hand with my wellbeing
Of course, rules, discipline, order and tidiness – whether in the home, at work or in people’s lives – aren’t a bad thing, but I eventually realised that I was demanding too much of myself and that everything must go hand in hand with my wellbeing.
So, even though I like things to be tidy, I’m no longer a slave to it; one of the good things about my life now is that I no longer worry so much about getting things done. These days I live with my daughter; between the two of us we keep everything in order at home. On days when I want to clean the house, I clean it; on days when I don’t want to do anything, I don’t do anything, and nobody says a word to me, and my house stays just as it always has. I don’t wear myself out working so hard; now I devote more time to looking after myself.
When I focus on external role models and strive to emulate them, they can end up hurting me without me even realising it; the truth is that when I stop to reflect, I mustn’t forget that when the urge for perfection strikes, the only standard I need to live up to is that of being perfectly myself.
The gift of our very existence
All things considered, doing the best I can without anxiety or undue effort gives me the sense of a good, relaxed way of life. Every moment of our lives is worth making the most of; I must cherish and love these present moments in order to live them to the full.
It is we ourselves who give value to our own time. If we spend our time growing spiritually, becoming better people, and smoothing out the rough edges of our character and temperament – which can even cause us to hurt those around us – that time will be rich, full of peace and joy.
Someone once said: ‘Sharing time has added value’: for time that is not used selfishly, for one’s own sole and personal benefit, can come to have extraordinary value.
When we generously give others a part of our time and our presence, we are doing something very valuable. That time will never be wasted; indeed, even when we have left this world, there will always be someone who remembers us because they will carry within their lives the gift of our time, the gift of our very existence.

An obligation to ourselves as human beings
As people, we have a great capacity to give; when we set our minds to something, we devote ourselves to it until we achieve it. We simply need to desire it, want it and feel confident in ourselves, and in this way, we can achieve anything.
Take, for example, situations where it is simply not feasible to take on challenges – particularly when a family depends on us. Even then, we have the capacity to achieve what we want, because often what we want is a necessity and an obligation to ourselves as human beings: to demonstrate our capabilities and skills, both in our personal and professional development.
In any case, perfectionism and procrastination go hand in hand and never lead to anything. If I allow myself not to ask for anything more, but simply decide to work with the resources I already have to contribute to the task at hand; in this way, what I can contribute is myself, my knowledge and my creativity, because I know that if I do it just one more time, to the best of my ability, I’m sure I’ll do it well.
