Have You Been Shilled?

Well have you?

to shill – to act as a promoter or spokesperson

That’s the basic definition according to Merriam-Webster. I think many of us have come to understand what that term means in the context of cryptocurrency, with an inside man hyping up a coin or token to the public regardless of whether said project will be of future use or value to potential investors.

But have you been shilled in ways not related to cryptocurrency? For some, the idea of higher education is shilled by universities and other institutions that financially gain from the exorbitant tuitions. For others, the institution of marriage is shilled by society, the church and/or the government for one reason or another. I’m not saying I agree with these ideas. I’m just saying that the notions aren’t new.

So, keeping the more negative connotation of shilling in mind, I have two questions for you:

1) Is there a coin or token you believe has value only because it’s being shilled (i.e., no viable tech behind it)?

2) Do you feel at some point in your life that you have bought into something (or many somethings) because it was heavily shilled?

Don’t be shy. There’s no judgment here. Your thoughts and experiences are your own, and you have a right to them regardless of popular opinion. Please share below.
