Grilling for the Family
Had the family over for a cookout today. Just me, the wife, our youngest son, and his girlfriend. Nothing fancy. No big crowd. Just the four of us.
Grilled burgers, sausages, and chicken kabobs wrapped in bacon. The basics done right. Setup was simple. Just me standing at the pellet grill, flipping stuff, holding a beer. That's all you really need.
We talked about them moving out of their separate apartments and into one together. The hunt for their own place. What they're looking for. What they can afford. The usual stuff young couples deal with.
We talked about his schooling. He's working on his degree and staying busy. We also got into the latest cyber attack that impacted Canvas. Because of course we did. That's what happens when your son is into IT like his old man.
He mentioned wanting an actual physical firewall for his home lab. I get it. Once you start building out your own setup, you want to do it right. The itch is real.
Afterwards we all moved to the living room and watched Raiders of the Lost Ark. Neither of the kids had ever seen it. Let that sink in. A whole generation walking around having never watched Indiana Jones outrun a boulder or melt some Nazis. We fixed that.
These are the moments that matter. No schedule. No rush. Just family around food and conversation. Introducing the next generation to the classics.
Doesn't have to be complicated. Burgers on the grill. Beer in hand. People you love sitting around talking about their lives. That's enough.
And doing it again tommorrow for Mother's Day!

Thanks for reading,
Joe

That's awesome! Scary to think the whole generation hadn't seen Indy outrun that boulder, take on the snake pit, and watch the Nazi's faces melt. Just doesn't seem right somehow. Now they need to see the third one too!
Awesome grill, it looks good!
That's awesome! I did a bit of grilling myself this weekend. Lot's of work in the yard and getting the trailer ready too. I think it would be cool to have a home lab, but I can pretty much do anything I want at work, so it loses a bit of luster when you have a whole large scale network at your fingertips. Probably one day I will have one though. That Canvas hack didn't impact us, so we have been pretty happy so far!
Glad you were able to enjoy the weekend so far. Yeah, I get what you are saying about the lab. HE is still in school, so learning. It has helped him a great deal. Most of the equipment is EOL switches and stuff. But it serves its purpose for him.
Indy as awesome. I think we need to do a marathon and watch them all.
For sure.
Yeah, that is very cool. I wish everyone had that kind of ambition. My worker has just started to build his own home lab as well.
I just had my late Roommate's sister come visit me, her husband came to help me mend my sad looking cedar fence. I made sure I fed her and her hubby for their help by firing up the BBQ for some burgers and smokies for the second time this year. The fence was only 30% done, too much chatting.
Ahh, the sounds and smell of summer.

That is a good reason for things to go unfinished.
That's an activity I can do on my balcony. I used to know someone who used his grill on the balcony and he got sued 😬
So is there something left for me?
Leftovers in the fridge. Welcome to them :-)
Thank you :)
I'm glad you fixed the Indy issue. Unbelievable. Kids of today eh. That's good wholesome entertainment right there. Did they like it??
Chicken kabobs wrapped in bacon.....you can't go wrong with that! And you are correct...these are the moments that truly matter.
Sadly, they left before the faces of the Nazis got melted off. They did say they plan to watch it later on though.
I would invite all for leftovers, but II just finished them off this morning. :-)
You might have to quiz them...
