I made an assumption and I totally was wrong. Here's what happened...

I had an hour in total between leaving the house and when I needed to get back to the house to be able to go to the local shops:

  • buy a whole bunch of groceries
  • some natural insect repellent
  • pick up a package from the post office, and
  • get red cellophane that had been on the to-buy list for months

I was so impressed. I had music on. I almost never listen to music when I'm out in public, but I was focused! I wasn't going to have conversations with anybody. I wasn't going to dawdle on anything. Get in, get out, get all the things, get home in time to talk to my dad.

In my hurry to do all the things and get everything stuffed into the two small shopping bags I had, when I went to the art and craft store to buy this cellophane, in my messing around to put my cash away and put my wallet in my handbag, I left the cellophane behind 🤦‍♀

When I got home, I realised my mistake, and I remembered that the man who had served me hadn't offered me a receipt, which at the time I hadn't thought I would need. He also hadn't seemed terribly friendly. He hadn't smiled at me as he had served me.

I made an assumption that this meant that he didn't really care to make sure that I had my things. That, perhaps, he was not interested in doing his job well. And if I went in a few days later, when I needed to go back to the shops again, even if he remembered who I was, he would dismiss my story and expect me to buy it again.

This couldn't have been further from the truth.

I went back into the shop today, and it's now 4 or 5 days later, and there was a young woman in there. The man who had served me was not in sight, so I went to the shelf, and I picked up the same cellophane colour.

As I went to approach the lady, I asked her if the older man who worked there was there today. She said, "Oh no, he's not."

Then, when she saw the cellophane in my hand, she continued, "Oh, but are you the lady with the red cellophane? He chased after you that day and went to this shop and that shop looking for you. You can just take that."

I asked her if he told her about it, and she said, "Oh no, I was working that day," and reiterated that I could just go ahead and take the red cellophane with a big, happy smile on her face.

While this item was only $2.50, which is not a big deal for the amount of money that we make here in Australia, I was so grateful for the thought that it was important to him that he got that to me and that he had gone out of his way to do that.

That kindness and thoughtfulness really sat with me. It was such a good reminder about not making assumptions. That just because he didn't smile and he didn't seem happy doesn't mean he didn't care.
