On Being "Good Enough"
Some people have the good fortune to not only have natural aptitude for something, but to also have the drive to reach brilliance.
They are the ones we end up watching on the news and read documentaries about.
But the majority of us are basically adequate at what we do and while we might harbor aspirations to great things, we will likely never progress much beyond being "good enough."
It's one of the core fallacies behind the notion of "aspiring to leadership:" there can only be a few leaders, and likely many followers.
I remember a late uncle of mine who made it to Assistant Office Manager at a municipal office when he was in his early 30s... and that remained his position until he retired, at age 67.
As far as he was concerned, that was a decent life, and after 40+ years of service, he received a decent pension.
When people talk about brilliance and "exceptionalism" they often lose sight of the reality that the vast majority of the world is really pretty modestly abled and not really interested in pursuing greatness... even though we are told that it's what we "should" want.
Typically, I have only ever cared about doing well, without any interest in rising to the top. Well, at least not in most areas of life.
Just take something like Hive. I'm never going to become some super whale here, and I'm unlikely to end up posting more than once or twice a week.
And I'm really OK with that... it's my own version of being "good enough," and it doesn't mean being some sloppy "who cares" participant, either!
It might not be everyone's cup of tea... but I'll take it!

Also sometimes people don't want to be at the top. In my line of work taking on a "higher" role would mean being a manager and less time with clients. It'd mean dealing with scheduling and paper work instead of the stuff I enjoy. And every step higher means less and less time with clients, less time doing what got me into this line of work.
I also have a friend who loves being a waiter and never ever wants to be a manager cause she'd actually make less since she does really well in tips.
