As someone who loves seeing how history and modern strategy intersect, I couldn't help but think of one of the greatest military commanders of all time when looking at today’s World Cup clash.

Over 2,000 years ago, Julius Caesar made a very sharp observation about the people of northern Gaul in his famous work, De Bello Gallico (The Gallic War). Right in Book 1, Chapter 1, he stated unequivocally:

"Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae."
(“Of all these, the Belgae are the bravest.”)

I always find his reasoning fascinating: Caesar argued that this relentless fighting spirit came from the fact that the Belgae were furthest removed from the "softening" influences of Roman civilization and were constantly battle-tested at their borders. They were considered tough, fearless, and tactically disciplined.

We actually just saw a massive display of this exact resilience in their recent victory over the USA. I was watching that game, and it was completely overshadowed by the absolute debacle surrounding the rescinded red card.

The controversy, the VAR confusion, and the emotional rollercoaster of having such a pivotal decision taken back could have easily derailed any normal team's focus. Instead, I watched the Belgians channel that chaos into pure determination, locking down the game and fighting their way to a hard-earned win. It proved to me just how mentally tough this squad really is.

Now, looking at the matchup against Spain, I see these historical traits—sheer willpower, defensive grit, and iron discipline—forming the absolute foundation of the "Red Devils." To me, Spain often represents the "civilization" of modern football: technical perfection, intricate passing, and aesthetic dominance.

Belgium, however, is challenging them with that exact virtue that commanded Caesar's respect: pure, unyielding bravery.
