The very essence of African religion lies in practice, not theological explanation; it is through liturgy and narrative that theology is systematized. Thus, for Africans, religion is life. African religion informs everything.

Here, from language to reflection and from reflection to language, from humankind (Gbὲtͻ) to its creations; from humankind to God (from Gbὲtͻ to Gbὲɖotͻ).

The clearly stated question is as follows: What is the nature of this religion of the Fon (an ethnic group in southern Benin)?

If by religion we mean the belief in a transcendent being, to whom we are bound by duties and rights, to whom we are accountable, whom we invoke, to whom we make sacrifices, whom we implore for this or that, and to whom we give thanks, then there are indeed religions in traditional Africa...

Understanding our traditions also means understanding that they continue to live, adapt, and bring people together.

Culture is shared; it is passed on.
