East London: Best by far

East London just has something about it that you cannot really find anywhere else. It is loud, busy, colourful, rough around the edges and full of life. You can walk down one street and see people from completely different backgrounds, hear different accents, smell food from different parts of the world and somehow it all works together. That is what makes East London special.

Places like Stratford, Leyton, Walthamstow, Hackney and Ilford each have their own character. There is always something happening, whether it is football being played in the park, people hanging around outside shops, music coming from someone’s car or a packed high street on a Saturday afternoon. It feels alive.

East London is also one of those places where you learn to be yourself. Nobody is trying too hard to impress anyone. People have their own style, their own way of talking and their own personality. You grow up seeing people from different cultures and backgrounds every day, so being different does not really feel that different.

The food is another reason East London deserves its reputation. You can get proper Nigerian food, Turkish food, Indian food, Caribbean food, Bangladeshi food and basically anything else you can think of without having to travel far. Sometimes the best places are the small ones you would walk past if you were not paying attention.

Then there is the football culture, the music, the slang and the humour. East London has produced and influenced so much of what people associate with London culture today. There is a certain confidence that comes from being from the East. You might leave East London, but people can still tell where you are from.

East London is not perfect, and that is exactly the point. It has its problems, but it also has character. It feels real. It has history, personality and people who are proud of where they come from.

For me, East London is the best because it does not need to pretend to be anything else. It is simply East.
