Why can't we be friends?

Am I missing a function on this? Or is Zuckerberg dictating who and how many friends I can have? I remember myspace, bebo and google+ (if that's still in existence) why can't we invite friends and create groups? It would speed up the up take on Steemit but maybe I am missing the point? Facebook is beginning to drive me slowly insane, yet I can't wake up with turning the fucking thing on and seeing what I've missed. (Hence why I am here)
