A Change to Delegation Points Rewards and What Comes Next for Points
Points are the reward layer that sits on top of Ecency. You earn them for showing up and taking part and you spend them on things that push your work further. For that loop to keep working, what goes into it and what comes out of it have to stay roughly in balance. This post explains one change we are making now and one we are giving you advance notice of.
What is changing today
If you delegate Hive Power to Ecency, you have been earning Points for it every day, automatically, whether or not you ever opened the app.
From now on, delegation rewards accrue while you are active on Ecency. If an account goes 90 days without any activity, its delegation Points reward pause. The moment that account is active again, rewards start accruing again from that day.
What counts as active
Anything you actually do:
-
opening the app, which files your daily check-in
-
publishing a post or a comment
-
voting or reblogging
-
posting a wave
-
spending or claiming Points
That is a low bar on purpose. A single visit inside a 90 day window is enough. If you use Ecency at all, even occasionally, nothing about your rewards changes.
What does not count is a reward landing in your account on its own. Delegation rewards, referral rewards and community rewards all arrive without you doing anything, so they cannot be the thing that proves you are still here.
Your existing balance is safe
This is worth saying plainly, because it is the question everyone asks first.
Nothing you have already earned is affected. Every Point sitting in your account stays there, claimable, for as long as it takes you to come back and claim it. The change only affects whether new delegation rewards keep accruing while an account sits idle. It does not reach backward.
If you delegated years ago, drifted away and never claimed, your balance is exactly where you left it.
Why we are doing this
Points are capped at 1 billion. That cap has been part of the design since the beginning and it only means something if issuance stays connected to real use of the product.
Delegation rewards had drifted away from that. They were the largest single source of new Points and a large share of them were flowing to accounts that had not opened Ecency in a long time. Points were being created for participation that was not happening. That is not sustainable for anyone holding Points, because every Point minted for nothing dilutes the ones earned for something.
Tying the reward to activity fixes that at the source. It also means we are not taking anything away from anyone to do it.
Delegating Hive Power to Ecency still matters and we are grateful for it. It supports the free account signups, the curation trail and the resource credits that keep the apps usable for everyone. If you delegate and you use Ecency, your rewards continue exactly as before.
Advance notice: unclaimed Points
The second thing is not live yet and we are telling you early on purpose.
We are considering a rule where Points that sit unclaimed for 90 days expire. Claiming is a single tap in the app and Points are meant to circulate, not to sit in a pending balance indefinitely. A large amount of Points is currently parked unclaimed, some of it for years.
This will go into effect from tomorrow, if you have been active and claiming pending point rewards, you won't notice any changes.
The practical advice in the meantime costs you nothing: open the app and claim your Points. If you have a pending balance, claim it now and the question never applies to you.
What this does not change
-
Points you earn from posting, commenting, voting, reblogging and checking in: unchanged.
-
Reward amounts for delegation: unchanged. The rate is the same, it is the accrual that now depends on activity.
-
Liquid HIVE curation 100% return: unchanged.
-
Your ability to claim, transfer or spend anything already in your balance: unchanged.
-
The 1 billion cap: unchanged and this is part of making it hold.
What to do
If you delegate to Ecency, just keep using it. One visit every few months clears the bar comfortably.
If you have not opened Ecency in a while, now is a good time. Check your Points balance at ecency.com/perks/points, claim whatever is pending and have a look at what the Points economy can do for your posts.
Questions about how this affects your account are welcome in the comments and we will answer them.

This is a really good decision. Making engagement a requirement is much more important because it rewards users who are genuinely active. In this way, engaged users earn points and make proper use of them. On the other hand, inactive users often let all of those points go to waste.
I've seen some users who have hundreds of thousands of points, yet they hardly use them at all.
I also have one suggestion for the Ecency team. If possible, it would be great to see the Ecency token listed on a decentralized or centralized exchange. That would increase its visibility, improve accessibility, and likely boost its demand as well.
I am here quite regularly, but I only do my claims of everything once a month, so I appreciate the 90-day flexibility.
Hello
I don't agree.
I think ecency could loos delegations.
And that is no activity if i have only to login or to claim.
It would make sense if ther is ads in the app and some adviews are generatet and earnings.
But now some users could ask:
What will happen if i get ill and can't login for 1-2 years. I give a delegation but don't get Points. Wtf.
I thought i will read something about new options, how to user Ecency Points. :(
Good one here. 90 days is a very good time for any user to check in for any reason.
Activities are always a key 🔑 to functionality, especially for community growth 😇
This is a good change, active users we need on Time square, activity is good for all.
You still get 100% curation delegation share only Points would require you to claim every 3 months otherwise you won't loose anything but you won't gain points non stop also, that's to make sure points economy stays balanced and healthy.
This makes sense. The protection of previously earned points is a good one.
I think that’s exactly why some people have delegated tasks to Ecency in the first place—so why wouldn’t they continue to delegate to Ecency in the future, rather than somewhere else, where they can also benefit without having to be active?
And on top of that, you could even automate that activity.
As I said, I’d find that useful if there were ads in the app or on the website. But that’s not the case.
What’s the deal with that, actually? I thought it was planned. At least that’s what was said months (years) ago.

Why it matters: A little change in point rewards worth reading to know changes.
It's a good decision to keep the ball rolling in ecency.
Again curation rewards which is in HIVE is not changed, only points. Delegation is always voluntary, we haven’t forced anyone. We offered if you have HP which you are not able to utilize fully delegate to get your daily HIVE share plus points. Points now require you to be active at least once per 90 days.
Yeah, I understood that right from the start—that it's all about the points.
My point is, why should people still delegate to Ecency when there are tons of other options out there, including Autovote?
This isn’t about me at all—it’s more that I think it’ll be a disadvantage for Ecency.
So why wasn’t something developed sooner to let people actually use their points?
Well, that’s for you to figure out; you’ll have to see how things develop.
Still, here’s my question again: what happened to the idea of advertising as “Leoads,” which was around for a short while?
Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
We never entertained idea of Leoads, can you tell us more what that was about? Do you mean to have ads on website/app, if so that we said many times we don't want to do because it doesn't bring any revenue with current size of userbase we have, just makes experience worst and affects privacy of users.
This change is good.
Back when Leoads was just getting started, I asked if something like that was planned for Ecency, but I was told there were a few other things that were more important. But yes.
I think there are plenty of ways to integrate advertising without negatively impacting the user experience too much.
And so it will remain a chicken-and-egg problem.
I don’t think the user base is too small, and if done right, it could increase the number of users, which would also generate revenue for Ecency and reduce—or at least lessen—its reliance on DFH.
you could start by offering Ecency points for watching ads—on a voluntary basis to earn more points in Spin & Win, meaning an extra spin per video.
Maybe even extra points for that—perhaps tradable on the Hive Engine—that users could use to do more. For example, they could use them to get a better delegation than with the regular points.
I think Ecency has more potential, but it’s not being utilized:(
This could be a good way to boost being active, or at the very least would further reward those who remain active on the platform.
I didn't know there was a limit (by design) to the number of points, but it's good to know now.
Ecency is always reliable, thank you.
Hello @ecency ,
Did I understand correctly that only unclaimed points are lost after 90 days of inactivity?
You don't lose the purchased points, right?
As you know, I have been sponsoring Ecency points for the Hive Soccer Game (powered by @jaki01) for years; this year, it’s 17,000 Ecency points again, plus a bit more. Would the winners lose their points after 90 days of inactivity?
Thank you for the clarification and information!
Also an Ecency.pro member as of a few minutes ago.
cheers 🤠
Hi
This is about reward Points created by delegating HP to @ecency account. All other points are not affected. If you delegated HP to @ecency and haven't claimed your pending rewarded Points or been inactive in past 90 days, new points won't be rewarded for those delegations daily until active again. HIVE rewards for delegations not affected, they keep flowing.
Thank you for question and support!
Thx!! 🤠
