What is free verse? How can someone write a poem without rhyming? Why would they do something like that?!

Free verse is 'A poetic form divided into lines of no particular length or meter, without a rhyme scheme.' - Wikipedia.

However, free verse can optionally contain forms of structure, such as repetition, occasional rhyme and conversation-like meter. The joy of reading free verse lies in finding the connections and discovering the underlying structures and meter employed by the poet.

i just want to be closer to you
as we're waking up

we kiss the air
we can make amends

a melody so sweet
the heart of the matter
a beautiful light

time is passing
out of sight, out of mind

you take my hand
i'm in your arms

our souls ignited
luminous
