Psychological thrillers are one of my favourite genres because the most frightening place in such stories is not a dark alley or a cabin in the woods but the human mind itself. And Ted Dekker is one of the best thriller authors who digs deep into this subject without holding back.

I read Thr3e a few years ago and the story has stayed with me ever since. In this book, Dekker takes full advantage of his skill as a writer to explore the power of the mind. He is known for combining suspense with questions about spirituality, morality and human nature to deliver plot twists that shock readers. This book begins with a threat and continues to tighten the pressure until a climatic end.

Thr3e is about Kevin Parson, a seminary student whose life appears morally upright until he gets a phone call from a man named Slater. He demands that Kevin confesses a hidden sin within three minutes or his car will blow up. Kevin manages to escape the threat but that marks the beginning of a dangerous psychological game of riddles and explosions.

As Kevin tries to discover what Slater wants, he is forced to confront parts of his past that he would rather leave buried. His childhood friend, Samantha becomes involved along with FBI agent, Jennifer Peters and the investigation turns into something far more personal than a hunt for a criminal. Will Kevin survive this ordeal? Who is Slater and what is the sin he wants Kevin to confess?

My Review And Rating

I read one of Dekker's books and usually decide it's my favourite until I pick up another one of his. This author is simply great at writing psychological thrillers that hold you hostage until the last page. That's how I felt after reading Thr3e.

The plot of this book is equal parts thriller and psychological centred on the nature man and his struggle with good and evil. It's easy to read and once Kevin receives the phone call, the story moves with urgency making it fast-paced. Dekker doesn't waste readers’ time with boring details but dives straight to the heart of the matter. He frames the story in a way that you'll want answers immediately as the suspense builds but he's careful not to hand them over too easily.

The psychological side of the story is where it becomes interesting than an ordinary thriller. The book builds a mystery around Slater and his persistence in exposing Kevin as someone different from the person the world believes him to be. It leaves readers wondering what we humans are capable of hiding from each other. Kevin sees himself as a good person and believes he understands the difference between right and wrong. Yet the story keeps challenging that confidence.

This novel also explores the battle between good and evil particularly through a Christian perspective. The author uses Kevin's situation to examine repentance, guilt, confession and free will. The central idea of this book is that people are always caught in a struggle between good and evil regardless of which side they choose to stand in. I love how this author blends these themes into a thriller and places his readers close to Kevin's experience. The plot twist toward the end caught me off guard which I applaud the author for.

One beef I have with this book is the use of symbolism. It's supposed to be subtle but Dekker makes it too obvious. The title and book cover already tells us what it is, so I don't expect the story to lay it out openly. The number 3 is a big part of the villain's psyche and that is too obvious. He himself says how much he likes the number 3 more than once in the story. I would have preferred to see it as a more subtle element.

This book was made into a movie and released in 2006 but I chose not to watch it because I don't always trust adaptations. I wouldn't want the film to ruin my experience of the book.

Rating this book, I'd give it 8 out of 10 stars. It's well written with enough mystery to keep the pages turning and a shocker twist at the end. Dekker kept me on the edge of my seat with this one.
