Shaykh Ibnu 'Uthaymeen said:

"The eclipse is a warning from Allah regarding a punishment, the causes of which have been fulfilled. It is not a punishment in of itself, but a threat, as the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said: "The sun and moon are signs from Allah which He brings fear through them" as opposed to saying "He punishes through them"

We, however, do not know the details of this warning. It could be of a punishment that is imminent or on its way, one which will affect our bodies, wealth, children or family, one which will be all encompassing or specific. It is for this reason that the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said: "If you see a change in the sun or moon, then rush to the remembrance of Allah."

Notice how he didn't say "make your way to" or "pray" or "remember Allah" but said "rush to the remembrance of Allah, to repentance, to charity, to prayer [..]"

These are indicators to just how colossal this happening actually is."

Tonight's eclipse, therefore, isn't merely about the obscuring of a planet by another, but a sign that's expected to eclipse our sins, secret habits, prohibited financial transactions and their likes from our lives forever.
