Seeing Flowers Beyond Color

I have accumulated a decent number of flower photos in my camera roll over time. Somehow, flowers have become one of my favorite subjects ever since I became more serious about taking black-and-white photos. Whenever I go for a walk and notice an interesting flower, I usually stop for a few moments and try to find an angle worth capturing.

Some people might wonder why I would remove the colors when flowers are naturally known for being colorful. For me, however, black-and-white photography offers a different way of appreciating them.

When the colors are removed, my attention immediately shifts toward the form, texture, patterns, and lighting of the flower itself. The curves of the petals become more noticeable, while the shadows create separation between each part of the flower. Even the smallest details that might be overlooked in a colorful image can suddenly become more interesting.

That has become one of my principles whenever I take photos. I don't necessarily want to show a subject exactly as our eyes normally see it. Sometimes, I want to remove one element so that the others can receive more attention.

Flowers work especially well for this because every variety has a different shape and texture. Some have soft and simple petals, while others have complicated forms that become even more dramatic in monochrome.

Photography has taught me that beauty doesn't always depend on color. Sometimes, taking something away helps us notice what has always been there.
