Monumentul Independenței Turnu Magurele (The Independence Monument in Turnu Măgurele) | Let's travel together #365

I've mentioned it countless times before, and I will still say it. There is no better way to learn history and what a place has been through than visiting proper places that are so rich in historical events that have left marks on a country.

One of these places is what I'm going to show through this post, which, even if it might seem just like another monument, is so much more than that.

First, the monument itself is composed of three people rather than a single character, which is met in most cases. The three people you see as part of the sculpture were meant to represent three different ranks of soldiers, which were infantrymen, naval personnel, and border guards, all of them fighting for the same cause.

This cause was mainly to win the fight against the Ottoman armies that made their way towards Romania through the southern side of the country, via the Danube River.

When it comes to the sides of the monument, though, the story is a lot more complex. From people bleeding, to those who were fighting for the country, from excitement of winning a fight (but not the battle) to feeling like out of control, every single man who is part of the bronze walls has his own story.

More than that, there are reproduced even moments with the Romanian armies passing the Danube River, as well as the attack they made in Plevna, Bulgaria.

And if you are not really into history or such monuments don't make a lot of sense for you, then keep in mind that The Independence Monument in Turnu Măgurele is placed on the main entrance to the Central Park, which is one of the best places in town one can go to stay away from stress and daily routines.

I am not sure whether the park was renovated recently or it is common to maintain it since such an important monument is placed at its entrance, but what I can surely say is that I felt amazing walking on the alleys, spotting lots of cool places where one can take a picture or simply rest.

The building you see in the distance in one of my pictures from above is actually the cinema, which was left in disrepair for many years before being fully renovated. What's so cool about it is that the original structure and architectural design were maintained, also attracting the title of a historical monument, yet so important for the country.

This is actually more like a 2in1 experience since it also hosts theatre performances.

Anyways, whether you are into theatre or film, into history or natural landscapes, The Independence Monument in Turnu Măgurele has a bit of everything. And for a person who hated history in schools, it's not a small thing to get so fascinated by sitting in front of such an imposing monument in the 21st century, 150 years later since it was built.

Not to mention that I had this walk on the first hour in the morning and it felt incredibly refreshing to get bits of everything, in a city that might seem small and not with too many things to do around, but which proves every once in a while that you couldn't be any more wrong, especially since it offers so much more than some other larger cities. And I'd love to return one day just for the sake of spending a bit more time in and around Central Park.

The Independence Monument in Turnu Măgurele is located in the center of the city, on the main entrance to the Central Park, also known as Grădina Publică (The Public Garden), at the end of Independence Street. This is placed just 1.5 km away from the Turnu Magurele Train Station, and it won't take more than 20 minutes of walking to reach it.
