Everything but...
Over the last few weeks a few friends of mine have been working through some thoughts based around a book by Viktor E Frankl called, Man's search for meaning.
The people I'm talking about have had to do difficult things in life and, as often is the case with such people, remnants remain, scars and other things, and we have found some interesting thoughts - and found out some things about ourselves - based around the book and thoughts and experiences of its author.
I thought I'd share a few quotes from the fellow, Viktor E Frankl, in a post or two.
"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." - Viktor E. Frankl
Feel free to comment with your thoughts or feelings about the quote above if you're so inclined.

I'd certainly agree with that. We don't always get to choose what happens to us, but we can choose whether it makes us bitter or better.
For sure and I've allowed both to occur over the years; yep, I get things wrong sometimes. I learned from those times though, when I allowed things to get the better of me over me getting better because of those things.
I'd say most of one's life is circumstances that one can't control or has no freedom over them, that's life I guess? The proper attitude makes a big difference, and I'd say it's an hard skill to master
That's a tough one for sure. We seem to have a really hard time controlling our attitude. Almost more than any other part of us I would guess.
I agree, it's a difficult state of mind to find and I fail a lot in my pursuit of it; but, of course, I succeed a lot too. It's an ongoing battle that I work hard to tip in favour of the good not bad aspects.
Yep agreed. It's interesting that it's so difficult to consistently attain but also such a beneficial thing to have situated in the right "place". A constant struggle.
That is such an empowering statement. It comes with great responsibility and accountability that some struggle with. Knowing you have impulses but an intellect and wisdom to regulate them puts the control over how we react solely in our hands. Owning the results of our reactions is a bitter pill sometimes but I would rather have control than someone else to blame.
Greetings @galenkp ,
This is one of my all time favourite books to think on and to recommend.
The quote you give is as good a take away as any from this excellent book.
I appreciate the story given of man being questioned by the SS ...was asked 'Who are you?' and he proceeded to show his documents....the questioner threw the documents in the waste paper bin and inquired...'Now who are you?'
Thank you for your post...enjoyed thinking again on 'Man's Search for Meaning'.
My greatest take away from the book....In adversity, in order to survive...one must remain objective.
Kind Regards, Bleujay
It's certainly something I feel most people should read and if not the entire thing then a summary of some of the quotes. Although, having said that, I think the book as a whole punctuates the quotes which give them more meaning and value.
Thanks for commenting, it certainly is a thought-provoking read.
Owning the results. That stuck out from your comment.
People seem to struggle with ownership of their thoughts attitudes and actions these days (maybe always?) and I think that's a terrible habit to form. Outwards blame may feel easier but the damage it causes to oneself is immeasurable...and it tends to compound through poor ongoing attitudes and behaviours.

STOPOne's own free way always comes at the sacrifice of others. The magic is within choosing what freedom to keep, and which to forfeit for the community. There might be humans who are happy all by themselves, I am not. So I gladly sacrifice some freedom for the sake of community.
I've not got much to add to your comment that would add any value; well said and thanks for responding.
