Uncertainty in cryptocurrency

Although recently we have seen a spike in bitcoin's price, could there possibly be a inevitable crash ahead? With the hype that is being built around the cryptocurrency market there is more and more money coming into this worldwide exchange, and is setting the scene perfectly for it all to come crumbling down.
What are the safety nets that mean that this won't happen? How can we rely on this market? And is it it too late to make money in long term cryptocurrency investing?
