Our actual destination was El Mirage, a six mile long dry lakebed where we could really let the cars rip. This is the same spot where speed enthusiasts have set many of the [land speed records](http://mojaveproject.org/dispatches-item/el-mirage-land-speed/) over the past century.

After a grueling drive in the 100ºF dry heat, we paid the $15 entry fee and hit the bedrock.
