It has been years since slavery ended. Back then, there was no choice: you were either a slave or you decided to escape to try to be free. There were also two possibilities: either they caught you and ganged up on you to force you back, or the mission was successful and you achieved the longed‑for freedom, far from the chains that bound you.

Fortunately, I didn't live through that, and neither did any of us, but humanity still hasn't internalized that it is free. Free to decide, to choose, to think, and to act.

It is easier and simpler to follow a pattern, an ideal, or a way of life than to create my own style, to start searching for my essence and where I truly feel good. Many people identify with those words even if they don't fully own them, but it is the reality that day after day you see them trying to build: someone else's reality.

The modern world brought with it imposed patterns through the rise of technology (which is not bad in itself), as long as you can distinguish between what I can do, what it will cost me, and my own ideals and possibilities. Instagram, for example (my favorite social network), already has too many influencers who dedicate themselves to giving advice about this and that, claiming that the best way to achieve something is by doing this or saying that, all to make us consumers fall into the vice of wanting to have the same life they show us.

I've thought about it too. These days I've been thinking about wanting to be a food and travel influencer, the kind that tells you where to spend your vacation, what to eat, and where to eat it when you get there, organizing your money and how to spend it. I love watching that type of video. How great it would be if they called specifically me to promote a food business and served me the most expensive, flashy, and delicious dishes on camera, just to make more people go and order what I ordered! I would love it if they booked day trips or short stays for me in hotels, pools, nature excursions, adventures, and more, so that more people could later enjoy them just like me!

But I realize that is not my life. Do I consume that type of video? Yes, as I mentioned before (and in large quantities), to learn about stores, coffee shops, and now for the summer, affordable places to enjoy a good family day—but that's it.

I decide whether to go or not, whether to eat the same thing or order something different, or whether to simply walk around Havana and discover those places for myself, without them being presented as divine or as just what I needed, without reviews, without opinions—only my own, and those are the ones that matter to decide for myself whether to return or not.

And this doesn't only happen on social media. Most of the time, people establish patterns to follow in order to build their own lives based on those close to them, like family members, friends, or neighbors (those who spend their lives looking sideways so they can later do the same). If my friend bought a new set of furniture, that's the necessary impulse for me to buy new furniture too (which is not my case, haha).

It's so beautiful to be authentic! Swimming against the current is not easy at all; quite the opposite. It still happens as it did with the slaves who escaped: they gang up on you to try to change your mind. For example, take me: I'm a young woman, 25 years old, and my pattern is not to have children like my classmates. People who know me always ask me when I'll become a mother.

From my authenticity and my desire not to do the same, I still do not wish to bring life into the world. There will be time and more life for that later. Everyone in Cuba listens to the musical phenomenon that is reggaeton (repartero); I don't like it. And it's quite hard to stand out from the crowd, starting at home with my little sister. Luckily, she has a fairly broad musical taste, but it also includes the aforementioned genre, and the truth is that sometimes we argue about it, and she questions my tastes (or lack thereof).

Letting the person you truly are emerge in a world full of patterns can be difficult, but it can't be impossible. It takes a lot of inner strength and emotional intelligence not to succumb to the pressures and temptations of the "everyone is the same" mentality that we see today. Being the green in a sea of blues will attract attention, sometimes for good, sometimes for bad, but the truth is that they will point at us and question us. It depends on us to keep being happy being OURSELVES and to keep being REAL.

Thanks for reading.
