How To Buy Bitcoin With Hive (Without Using Coinbase)

I just joined Hive less than 3 weeks ago at #hod Hive Open Days Alicante, so I'm still exploring the ecosystem and testing different apps and tools.

Since I'm already familiar with apps like Coinbase and Metamask, I wanted to try Altera by @magi.network — to see for myself how easy it actually is to buy Bitcoin using Hive.
So I recorded the full process as a quick UX test and video walkthrough.

First Impressions
What surprised me the most was how straightforward it was.
I’m new to Hive and figured this out. If it's this easy for me, I think a lot of people are sleeping on this.
The steps I tested:
- Login to Altera with Hive Keychain
- Deposit HIVE into the Magi wallet
- Swap HIVE → BTC on Altera
The actual process is really simple. I walked through the whole thing in under 60 seconds. The transaction took a few minutes to confirm on-chain but that's normal.
And I didn't even read the docs.
Final Thoughts on Altera
Honestly if it's confusing, nobody's going to bother — but it wasn't. That's the point.
For anyone new to Hive and curious about DeFi, just go try it. You don't need to know what you're doing.

I have keychain app on my iPad, but can't find a way to get it work as a browser extension? Glad you found it easy and useful, I'm sure it would work perfectly on my laptop but not so intuitive on my iPad 😂
You can try it here: Altera. Then you can log in with Hive. I used my Hive keychain extension on a Brave browser and it worked smoothly. Yes, the BTC just stays there in your Altera/Magi wallet unless you choose to send it to another wallet like Metamask. You get to choose when you swap.
I wish that too! It just assumes that all the Web3 newbies have BTC (maybe not).
We have to start somewhere and a lot of the people here have never had any crypto, so this is just the beginning 🙂.

Sure, just saying, that if you want to be successful on Hive, stake the Hive you earn and not sell them!
I suppose it works the other way around? Depositing BTC to Altera and swapping to HIVE... 😉

Of course, it was my first time using Altera and all I had was Hive so I just did the swap. My last screen was showing a swap from BTC to Hive.
