Misread Signs

False prophet, nightly heralding a man-made god
gilding the air with promise of revelation
a song, in truth, no less sweet for being counterfeit,
let us forgive the short-sighted visionary

Pity the poor bird its ill-timed enthusiasm,
its unholy lapse of judgment and misplaced hymn
having mistaken a common streetlamp
for the miracle of a rising sun…
