Aave Is Cleaning House: Why the Latest Proposal Matters for AAVE Holders

Aave just made one of its most decisive moves of 2026.
On July 30, a governance proposal was put forward to deprecate 50 low-adoption asset reserves and fully wind down deployments on six chains:
Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos. The changes affect roughly 98millioninsuppliedassetsand98 million in supplied assets and15.6 million in debt.

This isn’t a panic reaction. It’s a deliberate strategy.

Why This Matters

Aave has grown into the dominant DeFi lending protocol, but maintaining dozens of low-revenue markets comes with real costs — oracle maintenance, risk monitoring, liquidation infrastructure, and developer attention. Many of these smaller markets were generating under $5,000 in quarterly revenue while still requiring ongoing security and operational resources.

By pruning them, the protocol is:

Reducing its risk surface
Freeing up resources for core, high-volume markets (Ethereum, Arbitrum, etc.)

Strengthening long-term sustainability
Founder Stani Kulechov publicly backed the move, framing it as the result of a comprehensive review under the protocol’s updated risk frameworks.

The Bigger Picture for AAVE
This cleanup comes on top of several constructive developments earlier in the year:

Aavenomics 3.0 – automated buybacks funded by protocol revenue, making value accrual to the token more systematic

Launch of Stable Vaults aimed at fintech partners
Continued progress on Aave V4 and multi-chain liquidity architecture

Strong institutional interest (including Standard Chartered’s long-term bullish coverage)
Even in a tough market environment for altcoins, Aave continues to show it prioritizes quality over pure expansion.

Current Price Context

AAVE is currently trading around the $99 level. While far from its all-time highs, the combination of cleaner operations, buyback mechanics, and dominant market share in DeFi lending keeps the fundamental case intact for those looking longer term.

Final Thought
In DeFi, the protocols that survive and thrive are often the ones willing to cut what isn’t working. Aave is doing exactly that.

Are you holding AAVE through this phase, or waiting for clearer market direction? Curious to hear other Hive users’ takes.
