My New Knife Storage Idea.....
Happy Saturdayyyyyyyyy....
I don't know if you are like me on this or not, but I am forever coming up with new and hopefully more space efficient ways to organize and store things. Although it is not my main focus every day, I like when I come up with something really good and I "think" I have this time.
It all started with a random thought yesterday while I was on my lunch hour of maybe putting my small Baker's Rack from the kitchen area on my back porch instead, for storage for my plant gardening tools and extra soil and the such. I'm guessing you know that anytime you decide to move one thing it causes a domino effect. The things that are on the rack now that I use daily would need to go somewhere else. Counter space is small (definitely NOT a chef's kitchen).... so to move one thing means to move another thing to make space for that and then figuring out where that NEXT thing could go and the next and so on and so on.....
This time, I would have to come up with a place for my small microwave and my Coffee Center, which is not really a center, but my small drip coffee pot and 3 vintage glass jars of assorted coffee grounds. Very important things. So, the place I thought my microwave might be able to go included two knife blocks already, so when my brain got to the point I had to consider those, I wondered would I put the knives in a drawer (which of course there was no good open one) and get rid of the blocks altogether.
These reorganizing thoughts and wonders were twirling through my noggin. Then I remembered seeing a net friend on FB show where he had gotten the magnetic knife holders that can go on a refrigerator and Vwa-LA! The solution! I went to my computer on my afternoon break, pulled up Amazon, shopped around a little and found what I hoped would be a good set and ordered them to come to me this morning between 4 and 8 AM. By 5 am, they were on my front porch.
Isn't that the craziest miracle thing these days?? Order in the afternoon and on your porch before you get up the next morning??
There were two heavy duty magnetic strips in the box.
There was really nothing much too putting them up. There were two non-slip tabs for either end of each metal strip and then.... just stick them where you want them. What was nice was that they also included a pack of screws with little plastic wall anchors in case you wanted to put them on your wall instead and two long 3M sticky strips in case you just wanted to stick them to something else. Three possible ways to hang. Although I didn't need the other two, I found that nice that they made it possible.
Knife Blocks! Way back in the day, I was amazingly happy the first time I acquired a matching set of knives in their own block. It was not always a "thing" and when it became popular it took me a long time before I ever had one. It may have been Christmas gift. It has been so long now that I cannot remember if I bought them with birthday money or asked for them as a Christmas gift, but either way, there they were. The wooden block below is that block. The knife set in it was generic, but they have lasted all these years. it is at least 40 years old. The stainless one is only about 22 or 23 years old. I chose it as a gift one time for some "work" points I had earned. The knives were a little nicer and the block quite modern.
They were both full of knives a little while ago before I put some of the knives on the frig. I didn't think to take the photo till after. I will most likely donate the blocks and then the knife block chapter of my life will end.
The magnetic power of the strips is very strong.

I've always wondered how strong those magnetic strips actually are. I watch a few vanlifers on YouTube who use them, and they seem really handy. I'm just a bit clumsy, so I'd be worried about accidentally knocking a knife off and ending up with one sticking in my foot!
I understand. I had an inkling of the same concern. I did realize as I put the knives on it, that I needed to leave a little space in-between so I would not disturb other knives when I reach for one. I still may need some adjustments on that. I also decide while putting the knives on that I should slide them up as far as they would go because the base of the blade is the widest part and would give them the best grip area. I'm sure I will learn new things. Maybe put the lightest knives to the front side just in case. Most of them are over the counter, so should land there (if they don't bounce ha ha) if they fall. We will see if one day I do a post about the worst idea I ever had....🤣
Yes, if you do a post entitled "medical emergency," I will know what's happened. I think if you place them, like you said over the counter, you will be fine ... snigger.
Of course, I'll have to remember to grab my phone and take a photo of a knife sticking out of my foot while I wait for the ambulance. 😂.... otherwise, how good would THAT post be???

STOPYou reminded me that I had magnetic knife strips in a house I once lived in, but began using a knife block when I moved to this house with more counter space. The addition of a toaster oven reduced that space and once again those strips might be a good idea! Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm glad it was a helpful idea for you. I had never had the strips before. So far they have been working out quite nicely and I am enjoying my microwave in it's new spot. It did take me a few days before I stopped walking halfway across the kitchen when I had something to be microwaved, forgetting for a split second that it was no longer over there. 😂 I'm good to go now though.
