New Acquisition

Oreganillo is an aromatic plant very similar to oregano. In Cuba it is also known by the name of “orégano criollo” and is used both in cooking and in green medicine. It is employed to improve the flavor of meals, just a fresh sprig is enough to transform a simple dish into a recipe full of character. In the field of health, it favors digestion and relieves respiratory problems. Even in Cuban folklore it is used in domestic rituals and popular healing practices.

And that was my new acquisition last week, when at the fair of my community a man with a wheelbarrow was selling several seedlings of different plants: rosemary, basil and, among them, oreganillo. For a while I had wanted to expand the “garden” I have on the balcony of my house and I was looking to do it with an aromatic plant since I usually use the ones I grow for cooking.

Currently I have basil, oregano and now oreganillo is added, with which I am expanding my small green space. This excites me because besides using them in their natural state for seasoning—for me natural is always better—I also entertain myself taking care of them and watching them grow. It is an activity that entertains me and fills my leisure moments, keeping me in contact with what comes directly from nature.

In these publications I also like to show the other ornamental plants that I have. I believe that cultivating and attending plants are one of the things that most relax and help us to be centered in the present moment. In this small space that I plan to continue expanding I have cactus, aloe, linden, marble flower and a curious plant that has leaves from whose ends sprout small seedlings. These fall to the ground and immediately grow in any piece of soil. I do not know its name, so if someone could tell me, I would greatly appreciate it.

My balcony has become my small green refuge which connects me with the calm and the beauty of nature. Each new plant is an opportunity to learn something new. The oreganillo, like many of those I use daily, is my way of connecting everyday life with traditional knowledge, and in this way not forgetting that nature has always been an ally at the table and in health. With the oreganillo I continue adding to what I hope will be an ever larger garden.
