ESP/ENG - Hay kilómetros que no se miden en mapas, sino en intenciones / There are kilometers that are not measured on maps, but in intentions

We have all caught ourselves at some point looking at our phone screens, evaluating an invitation, a project, or an appointment, while letting out a sigh of anticipated fatigue. "It's too far," "traffic is going to be terrible," "I don't think I'll make it on time." Geography, schedules, and weather suddenly become our best allies to disguise a much simpler truth: we simply don't feel like it.

Because when desire exists, the map shrinks. When something truly moves us, an hour-long trip feels like a breath, bad weather becomes an anecdote, and fatigue disappears. On the other hand, when interest is lacking, even crossing the street requires a titanic effort.

The distances we invent

This reflection appeals to that architecture of excuses we build to protect our comfort zone or to avoid saying a definitive "no." We prefer to blame logistics rather than admit our lack of willpower.

But this rule does not only apply to a physical location or a social gathering; it works exactly the same way for life's major milestones:

  • Professional change: "It's not the right time," we tell ourselves, while keeping a project that requires effort on hold.
  • Pending conversations: We postpone a necessary dialogue using lack of time as an excuse, when in reality what is missing is the courage to face the outcome.
  • Personal decisions: The distance between where we are and where we want to be is rarely a technical obstacle; it is usually the fear of taking the first step.

The geography of willpower

Saying that something is "too far away" is, deep down, a statement of priorities. Distance is relative, but apathy is absolute. Recognizing that the obstacle is not the physical distance but our own reluctance is a necessary exercise in honesty with ourselves and others.

Learning to identify when we are inventing kilometers saves us energy and guilt. If the path feels too long before we even start walking, perhaps it is not a matter of finding faster transportation, but of calmly admitting that, simply, that is not our destination.

In the end, the places, goals, and people we truly want to reach... are never too far away.

Questions for the community

  1. Have you ever caught yourself inventing "logistical kilometers" just to avoid a commitment or a tough decision?
  2. What has been that project or location for which you traveled any distance without a second thought because the motivation was huge?
