ESP/ENG | Arquitectos de nuestro cautiverio / Architects of Our Own Captivity

A warm, fraternal, and cheerful greeting to this wonderful community! A big hello to you, who are taking a moment of your day to share these lines. What a joy to meet again in this corner of reflection and mutual growth!

Freedom is usually imagined as an open horizon, a space without borders where the soul breathes without restraint. However, within that infinite capacity to decide lies a silent paradox: we are so free that we can choose our own slavery.

Unlike in other eras where chains were imposed by foreign hands, today servitude is often a work of personal design, signed in silence with our own consent.

The Shadows We Choose

No one forces us to check our phone screens with compulsive anxiety, nor to inhabit routines that extinguish our inner spark, nor to sustain lifestyles shaped only to please an indifferent audience. We choose it. We design commitments that overwhelm us and adopt ambitions that never belonged to us.

Without realizing it, we become artisans of our own bonds when we embrace:

  • The gaze of others: We surrender peace in exchange for fleeting applause, sacrificing our essence just to fit into someone else's mold.
  • The cult of rush: We trade time —our most sacred asset— for things we do not need, turning life into a labyrinth of permanent occupation.
  • Inherited scripts: We walk down paths we never stopped to question, assuming roles that others wrote for us.

The Illusion of Open Doors

The most subtle form of captivity is one where the prisoner smiles, believing they are free. When we choose our own prison, complaint becomes impossible, for there is no external oppressor to blame; the key and the lock have always been in our hands.

However, recognizing that we were the builders of those walls is not a reason for guilt, but the seed of awakening. If we had the freedom to erect the cage, we retain intact the very same strength to tear it down.

In the end, true freedom consists not only in the ability to choose, but in the wisdom not to choose that which steals our light.

Questions for the community:

  1. In what area of your daily life have you ever felt that you chose a "chain" disguised as your own decision?
  2. What habit or commitment have you recently managed to let go of in order to reclaim your inner peace?
