Early Armadillo Day
Hello all, Been awhile since I posted here. I was able to get outside yesterday and go for a nice hike with a new friend I met. It was a little cool and cloudy, but great day for a walk in the woods. We found several of these Armadillo's during our short 2 mile walk, we spotted 4 of them.
I only got pictures of two of them, the others scurried into the brush before I could get a good shot. I must say I was impressed with how quickly they could move and jump about. I had only seen them slowly waddling around like an Opossum, but these guys could really move when they wanted to.
I originally had thought we would get some good birding pics, but we only saw a few birds in flight at long distance, and not the close encounters we were hoping for. Still these fellows were a welcome distraction and fun to watch digging around.
These guys are not native to Florida, but they have been here since the 1900's.
They are generally considered pests here because of the damage they can do to yards and gardens. They can dig over 15 foot long burrows and they love to root around for insects and such, tearing up yards. They have also been known to carry leprocy, so not recommended to handle.

Leprocy?! I had no idea!
I suppose they are like possums or porcupines or raccoons up here with their pest status. Really cool looking though with their armor and funny little faces.
Much more entertaining than birds!
I am so glad they have not migrated this far north yet. I've seen the damage they can do. Great photos
Beautiful animal. If it's true they transmit dangerous diseases to humans, I'm not entirely sure, but you can see it in their physical appearance when they're sick. Nice shots.

its my first time seeing this. if they are pests, its look like they are also rats since they can dig the ground.

I just can not bring myself to do the other kind of shot on them. Non photo shoot. They are too stinking cute. Even tho they do tear the sheite out of the yard.

They are cute in the woods, but I don't know that I would want them tearing up the yard. We had one here last year, but only saw it once or twice, I think maybe one the neighbors got rid of it as a couple were complaining.
