Map of Hatred
Early this year, we were asked to create a map of culture and communities for a sociology class.
My map consisted of multiple multi-coloured dots on google maps. Indicating our similarities and the idea that not one person is more important than the other through size, yet the distinction made with space and colour being one that we would make for ourselves. In that, as human beings, we want to believe that we are all special and singular. Later on, I came across these maps:

this is a map of hatred, created by students of California’s Humboldt State University using data taken directly from twitter. They compiled homophobic, racist and other offensive words and created an interactive map of the US from that data. It is bone-chillingly cringe-worthy.
HOWEVER

I did also come across this map:
which allows you to search for specific areas and view the First Nations territories all over North America. The beauty of this being that often the land of the First Nations bands would overlap, which lends to the idea that we are not in fact singular. We are one. Sharing this space we call earth with one another.
