This squid has its Latin name, Promachoteuthis sulcus. Can be distinguished from related sizes on the basis of several nuchal fusion morphological features between the head and mantle, The mantle is an important part of the anatomy of the molluscs of the body wall which includes visceral mass and is usually protruding in the form of flaps both outside the visceral mass.

some species of molluscs, mantle epidermis can secrete calcium carbonate and conchiolin, and can produce shells. The words mantle and pallium both originally meant robes or capes. This anatomical structure in mollusks often resembles a cloak because in many groups mantle edges, commonly referred to as mantle margins, extend far beyond the main body parts, forming a double-layered, flap structure that has been adapted for many different uses, including for example, siphons.
