13th Viewing and Discussion Panel

Peace and Blessings steemit, I hope everyone is doing well. Recently, I was invited to join a panel of experts on race relations at Austin Community College for a viewing of the Netflix documentary "13th". The documentary goes in depth about how slavery in North America was never truly abolished, but simply just changed its shape to what we know now as the prison industrial complex. If you have never seen this excellent documentary, I would highly advise that you watch it with your family, friends and loved ones as it touches on a very important issue that disproportionately affects people of African descent in the United States.

The 13th amendment of the United States constitution clearly states that slavery is only illegal against a person that is innocent of a crime, and this loophole has been exploited by the US government and corporations ever since psychical bondage of African people was lifted in 1865.

It was a great honor to sit on this panel and be able to provide my point of view on a subject many people avoid or are afraid to speak up about. When slavery and racism are mentioned, people's minds tend to move backwards, believing that this is something that took place long ago, and are no longer relevent issues. One of those most psychologically damaging things that can happen is for a person who is enslaved to believe that they are actually free. Study and be wise my friends, we still have lots of work to do.
