Please don't feed the mermaids at Rovinji, Croatia
When I was visiting Pula in Croatia last year, the season hadn't started yet and the city was still quite dead. There wasn't too much to do there, and one day I took a 45 minutes bus ride to Rovinji, a town about 40km away. Rovinji is a lovely fishing port and had a nice buzzing vibe, very different from Pula. A very welcoming sight when I arrived.
The sea was as clear as crystal in the harbour, and no matter where I walked, I could always see the tower from the Basilica of St. Euphemia.
Despite Rovinji being busier than Pula, it wasn't too crowded with people, and didn't feel as desolate as Pula. I felt the old town was nice for a walkabout, and had some interesting buildings, including one that looked like it was wearing two halves of a giant t-shirt.
The basilica was a short walk up the hill, going pass one of the many cobblestone lanes. As they say, every road leads to Rome, as long as you see the tower, it doesn't matter which path you take, you'll get there eventually. I just let myself get lost amongst the myriad of lanes, and see what greets me. White cat and blue shutters, not bad, I'll take that.
The tower didn't look as impressive as it was from down the marine, it looked a lot more majestic from far away. I felt it was a little anti climax. You know when you want something that is beyond reach , and when you finally get your hands on it, it's like ... is that it? There were a handful of other visitors who had braced the uphill walk in the sun like us. And we were all rewarded with a lovely view of the Adriatic Sea with Italy far beyond. Interesting trivia, did you know Venice in Italy is actually much nearer to Rovinji than Split in Croatia?
This is Grisia Street and is the main street running from the marina through the old town to the Basilica. My photos doesn't really do it justice due to the shade from the houses on both sides. The street is on a slight slope, and there were a few shops selling local products. It was quite picturesque though but I can imagine it being less so in summer when it's jam packed with people. Travelling off peak has its advantages sometimes.
I spent the rest of the afternoon chilling out in a cafe by the seaside. Its location was a little obscure and took me a while to find it. That was ok though, I didn't mind the stroll and extra walk, it was very interesting to see more of the old town.

Dang, that water is so clear! It reminds me of the lakes near where I live. It's always kind of a bummer when you go somewhere and it doesn't have the vibe that you were hoping for. My wife and I have been to a couple of places like that.
The water in Rovinj looks absolutely crystal clear. I really enjoyed looking at your photos of those narrow cobblestone streets, and that fluffy white cat was so cute. Finding a cafe built right into the cliff edge must have been the perfect way to relax after the uphill walk. And don't worry, I'll definitely remember not to feed the mermaids if I ever get the chance to visit! Thanks for sharing this lovely trip with us.❤️❤️
But why? Don't mermaids deserve to be fed? Not even with chocolate? 🙁
Those low wooden stools are typical of that region, actually of the whole former Yugoslavia. We had some in our old home too
And all that blue colour in Rovinj is so nice, the blue shutters, the sea, the blue bicycle and the stools. Pretty town. :)
I've visited rovinji, Rovigno three times when I went in Croatia and I still love it so much, every corner looks so magical ❤️

The Call to Conscience
Look at the ledger.
Look at the harm.
Look at the faces of those you have pushed away.
And then, choose differently.
Put down the weapon.
Open the hand.
Speak the truth.
The past is sealed. But the future is still unwritten. You can continue to dig the hole deeper, or you can start to build the bridge back.
For in the end, we are not defined by our mistakes, but by how we respond to them. Choose integrity. Choose mercy. Choose truth.

Looks beautiful. I love the old stone buildings. It reminds me of some plavmces in the French Riviera, St tropez, specifically. Croatia is on my bucket list

I know enough mermaid lore to be suspicious of them. I will neither offer nor accept gifts or food. I was a bit disappointed they were only mentioned in the title and last line, though. I was sure they would be more of a nuisance!

STOPYour photos are amazing. I'm trying to plan a shoulder season trip for next year but it'll end up busy at some point given the miles we'll do from March. I don't think we'll do coastal Croatia (been there years ago) but maybe inland.
I'm so amazed how clear water can be at some European places I visit. I never get to see them like that near me, you're so lucky to have them at your lakes
Perhaps chocolate might make the mermaid change colour, maybe we can try apple pie instead of we can find some?
I see, so the stools are a traditional thing! I thought it was not to obstruct peoples view of the sea. It certainly makes a nice impact of the overall vibes instead of normal height chairs and tables

It's because my sister in law is Croatian she lives in Germany but they pass their holidays in Istria where she came from and when we can we pass the holidays together there because we love Croatia ❤️

Thank you! August is hot but I like the climate there, too hot in the sun, in the shade of the pine forests it's pleasantly cool and the water is always a little colder, just enough to refresh you 😊
