🇬🇧 We are here at the commercial port of Longoni. Certainly none of you knows this place. It’s a very small commercial port that feeds an island of 500,000 souls. So, it’s very small. And yet, all the consumption of this island passes through here. Household equipment, clothing, food, water, vehicles, building materials, electronics, phones, computers, electrical cables, diapers, toilet paper... Everything. We’re already reaching an incredible number of containers here. by the hundreds, by the thousands and yet this is about feeding a stone surrounded by water of no more than 500,000 people. So imagine what it is when it comes to feeding a larger island, or partly equipping a country, a continent... Official and global figures indicate that there are around 7,000 container ships for a total of 50 million containers to be transported. That is an average of 7,000 containers per ship, with giant container ships capable of carrying up to 24,000 containers. This corresponds to nearly 300 million tons of CO2 emitted by container ships in order to bring our consumer products, and sometimes even our organic products, to you or to me!!!! A beautiful heresy, right? |
