Mount Semeru Alert Status Lowered

On Friday, December 9, 2022, Wafid said in a written statement that "the alert status would be evaluated again if there are volcanic earthquakes and deformations associated to the process of feeding magma to the surface" (low-frequency earthquakes, tremors, tilt meters, and GPS).

Despite the reduced alert level, the Geological Agency issued a warning to locals not to engage in any activities 13 kilometers from the mount's crater in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan and Kali Lanang.

Residents are warned not to engage in activities in the river or within 500 meters of the Besuk Kobokan river beyond this point because it could be impacted by lava flows and hot clouds that could expand to a height of 17 kilometers.
