When Goliath is Water
I don't think it's been two years since the last time we had to deal with crazy flooding on the farm. That's the cost of living where we live. Sometimes Mother Nature lets us know who's really in charge.
But apparently, the worst is yet to come.
It's impossible not to sound like an alarmist. It really is. All the models indicate that this year, the current we know as El Niño, is going to bring the heavens down on us.
Actually, I remember the last time we had such an event. I was a teenager, and I remember thinking of it as some sort of divine punishment.
If I remember correctly, it rained for three days straight. But not normal rain. The kind that hits the roof so hard you can barely have a conversation with someone.
I was living with Grandpa at the time, and he had given me the downstairs bedroom to stay in. On the morning of the third day, the water had entered the house. A river that was normally 400 meters away from where we lived had come to say hi.
The images are not too difficult to find, but I have to say, looking back, they still seem unreal. Almost as if, if I had not been there, I would be convinced someone had used AI to fool me.
My wife tells me today that we need to prepare.
Yes, I agree.
But I have no idea what we need to be doing, to be honest, and more importantly, if it will matter at all.
In other words, we could prepare all we want, but if it's stronger, as they say it will be, then no amount of preparation is going to do much.
At this point, I'm thinking we need to get some little boats or something.
It might be the case that to get out, to go to the road, to go get help, we might actually have to swim.
Sounds like I'm being a crazy man, but trust me, it can get that bad.
This puts me in a weird situation.
On the one hand, I feel like I should drop everything and work towards being ready for a literal deluge.
But on the other, I feel like I'm fighting Goliath.

Gah! The power of Mother Nature when she wants to flex. I think being prepared is a good thing. In so much as you can be given the unpredictable behavior. One thing I think sometimes gets lost in that prep is what to get ready for the furry family members. The best bet is to create a "Go Bag" for every member in your family including your pets.
We’ve been having a crazy summer here, no rain for months and days of 30 degrees Celsius or more for weeks on end. Very odd for England. This morning the heavens have opened and the birds are singing again. Will we get terrible flooding? Maybe.
I say be prepared. Expect more challenges of this kind.
Preparation is very essential and getting boats is a nice plan to.
Also maybe find somewhere else farther away you can stay if the water does get to the level of you having to leave.
What you'll do about the electrical appliances too.
We have fire. You have flood. Disaster preparedness for either of us requires plans for both bugging out and bunkering down, which both require different mindsets and preparations. Remember, set specific benchmarks for GO TIME and hold to them. Water rises to X level? Pack the essentials and go before the crowds and panic hit.
We are still recovering from our last flood where I live. It happened back in 2020 I think it was and it took out several dams along one of our rivers. They just finished rebuilding the one, but the other lakes are still empty.
