There are some very pretty spiders out there and this isn't one of them. In fact it's a rather plain looking brown hairy spider. I found it trying to make it's way into my house via the back door. I guess that's a sign of intelligence that it recognised the back door as the best way to gain entry :-)

The spiders head and body length was around 13mm. It's over all appearance and the arrangement of the eyes suggest it belongs to the Araneidae family, which are known as orb web builders. You can see the eyes a little better if you click on the third and fourth photos and view the larger version. I've not been able to get a more precise ID as yet although I suspect it may be of the genus Eriophora.

When I released the spider outside I grabbed a quick shot of the underside before it ran off.
