A sanctuary for peace

I've been at my job for 25 years, and although I used to have my own office, and the university had libraries, theaters, cafeterias, dining halls, buses, and green spaces, I must confess that there was a lot of noise, dirty, abandoned, neglected areas, damaged not only by the passage of time but also by the mismanagement of the university authorities.

Then came total destruction, the stripping of everything down to the walls, and all that remained of the university was rubble. However, like a phoenix, the university rose again (or we rebuilt it), and now it's a different place. While it doesn't have all the things and spaces it once had, it certainly has other advantages that make it a pleasant place to be, to teach, and to share knowledge and learning.

Gone are the walls covered in graffiti, political slogans, and posters of all kinds, with their old, peeling paint. Now, the clean, white walls are visually unobtrusive and bear witness to hours of teaching, presentations, and debates, but also to laughter, friendships, and the small, everyday conversations. The classrooms appear more spacious and bright, thanks to their white walls.

Likewise, the floors are sparkling clean. Every morning, the fresh scent welcomes us and is a silent incentive to stay inside the university and its classrooms. The same is true of the air conditioning, which works perfectly, and in a city with such a hot climate, attending classes in air-conditioned rooms is a blessing. There's no rush to leave, no exclamations about the high temperatures, no stifling heat—nothing. Classes are pleasant and lively.

Having worked in dirty and neglected spaces, I know that these characteristics are reasons why everything goes wrong. If there's trash, nobody cares about adding more trash. If something is broken, nobody cares about breaking more. On the other hand, if something is clean and tidy, people try to maintain that cleanliness and order.

In this case, the spaces where I work exude fluidity, care, harmony, and calm. There are no noises, neither auditory nor visual, to steal the peace of those attending the classes. Nothing external disturbs your inner peace, and this, though it may sound repetitive, a cliché, has a positive impact on your work. When the environment is ideal and pleasant for work, work becomes a pleasure.

Un santuario para la paz

Llevo 25 años en mi trabajo y, aunque antes tenía mi propia oficina y la universidad contaba con bibliotecas, teatros, cafeterías, comedores, autobuses y zonas verdes, debo confesar que había mucho ruido, suciedad, áreas abandonadas y descuidadas, deterioradas no solo por el paso del tiempo, sino también por la mala gestión de las autoridades universitarias.

Luego llegó la destrucción total: lo desmantelaron todo hasta dejar solo las paredes, y de la universidad solo quedaron escombros. Sin embargo, como el ave fénix, la universidad resurgió (o la reconstruimos), y ahora es un lugar diferente. Si bien ya no tiene todas las instalaciones y espacios que tenía antes, sin duda cuenta con otras ventajas que la convierten en un lugar agradable para estar, enseñar y compartir conocimientos y aprendizajes.

Han desaparecido las paredes cubiertas de grafitis, lemas políticos y carteles de todo tipo, con su pintura vieja y desconchada. Ahora, las paredes blancas y limpias resultan discretas y dan testimonio de horas de clases, presentaciones y debates, pero también de risas, amistades y las pequeñas conversaciones cotidianas. Las aulas parecen más amplias y luminosas gracias a sus paredes blancas.

Asimismo, los suelos están impecables. Cada mañana, el aroma fresco nos da la bienvenida y nos invita a quedarnos en la universidad y sus aulas. Lo mismo ocurre con el aire acondicionado, que funciona a la perfección, y en una ciudad con un clima tan caluroso, asistir a clases en aulas climatizadas es una bendición. No hay prisa por irse, ni quejas por las altas temperaturas, ni calor sofocante; nada. Las clases son agradables y dinámicas.

Habiendo trabajado en espacios sucios y descuidados, sé que estas características son la causa de que todo salga mal. Si hay basura, a nadie le importa añadir más basura. Si algo está roto, a nadie le importa romperlo aún más. En cambio, si algo está limpio y ordenado, la gente se esfuerza por mantener esa limpieza y ese orden.

En este caso, los espacios donde trabajo irradian fluidez, cuidado, armonía y calma. No hay ruidos, ni auditivos ni visuales, que perturben la paz de quienes asisten a las clases. Nada externo altera la paz interior, y esto, aunque suene repetitivo, a cliché, tiene un impacto positivo en el trabajo. Cuando el entorno es ideal y agradable para trabajar, el trabajo se convierte en un placer.
