Steemit ¿BROKEN?

My friend is really interested in Steemit and would like to participate in the community. He signed up on July 17 at 2PM PST, confirmed his email address, it's now 2 days later he hasn't received an email regarding account activation/approval.
After emailing support their response was:
Hi and thanks for your message.
We read all of the emails we receive to this address, however, please note that Steemit is in beta and we are unable to process >certain types of requests at this time including, but not limited to, emails regarding new accounts, name changes and forgotten >passwords.
Thanks for your patience as we develop the website and create additional support features.

Has anyone successfully created an account in the last few days? This may be killing our user adoption, and I don't understand why it would take 48+ hours to create an account?

I guess it's taking more than 3 days for new accounts to accept, as steemit getting many of the request from many people.

I think many people are starting to learn about steemit and they are overrun with account requests. The only thing steemit needs is an iOS app and then it will explode.
I thought it does have an iOS app called eSteem?
if steemit is getting many requests, and it's causing massive delays in account creation, I don't understand how they can scale to a reddit or facebook userbase.

Thanks @naturalsoda, I finally got my account approved and now officially on Steemit. Although it's a bit of hassle to wait for a few days for approval, it's a good sign that Steemit is growing rapidly. :)

Even thou I could read @ registration that the process could take up to 2 weeks.
I didn’t expect it to actually take over 2 weeks.
I began the registration the 4th of July and received the activation link the 21st.
There’s actually an option to pay and get instant verification... (if I recall correctly)
