The Pressure to Have It Figured Out

Growing up, we all had big dreams which some of us still have. But as we grow, life takes a different dimension for most of us. Some of us are able to achieve our dreams while others have to branch into other things due to circumstances or change of their vision. Regardless, we all envision a bigger and better future. During the times I was growing up, as much as I was young, I know how life was then. Life was tough for some people but things weren’t this bad. Then, I can say the system was working to some extent but today, that same system is literally built to work against you.

We live in a world today where you’re expect to have your life figured out at age 20, has a thriving career by 25 and if possible get married, have kids and even own a house and a car by 30. These unrealistic expectations leads so many people going to extents they will never go to on a normal day just to prove to others that they have the life they want.

But what I always say is, we are not loving this life to impress others. You’re living your life for yourself and all your choices will affect you in one way or the other without also forgetting we have to be responsible for all our actions. I was lucky to grow up with parents who guided me and gave me the exposure to explore and know what I want in this life. For me, I believe God made it such that I alias knew what I wanted to every stage in my life.

For example, when I was in high school, I knew what I wanted to study in the university and made sure to work hard yo achieve it. As I was closer to completing university, I was constantly thinking and exploring so as to know what step I would want to take in my life and I did. After Uni, I didn’t just sit around- I went straight for what I wanted head on and thanks to God, I am where I envisioned myself to be a few years ago. This isn’t the same story for everyone.

Some people have to go through life and find their way as the days come. There are people out there who are still discovering themselves as they grow and that’s totally fine. As far as you’re putting measures in place to develop yourself, you’re doing just fine. We might think that we don’t have time and we need to rush and do everything but as they say, if you rush you will crash. There’s always enough time for you to explore life and discover yourself.

I know people who started chasing their dreams at the age of 30, 40 and even 50 and there’s really no shame in that. That’s a sign of growth and determination if you as me. It’s better to be 50 and a pilot or whatever you want to be than be 50 and looking back to all that you could have accomplished.

Time does fly by really fast. However, the main purpose of life is to live fully and happily.
