Sunday night

Sitting in front of the monitor, I thought about the years I'd spent writing for the local newspaper. Despite my terrible spelling, I'd managed to get by; the work of the proofreaders and style editors sometimes truly saved my life. It was already midnight when they called me to clarify things. I left that life behind four years ago when I decided I didn't want to write anymore. I grabbed my old journal, turned off the computer, and never went back. A week later, someone from human resources called to tell me to pick up my severance pay. By then, I was already working as a barista in a coffee shop in the city. I signed without reading the agreement, took the check, and left without closing the door.

Sentado frente al monitor pensaba en los años que había pasado escribiendo para el diario local. A pesar de mi mala ortografía había podido salir adelante, el trabajo de los correctores de ortografía y estilo en ocasiones realmente me salvaban la vida. Ya eran las doce de la media noche cuando me hablaban para aclarar las cosas. Esa vida la deje atrás hace cuatro años, cuando decidí que ya no quería escribir, tomé mi viejo diario, apagué la computadora y no regresé. Una semana después alguien de recursos humanos me habló para que recogiera mi finiquito, para entonces ya estaba trabajando como barista en una cafetería de la ciudad. Firmé si leer el convenio, tomé el cheque y me fui sin cerrar la puerta.
