Beneath Your Bare Skin

The subtle way
The air felt that day
The breeze against skin
When did it begin
The falling apart
The dessicated heart
You resisted even then
Back when
I thought you were on my side.

That day
Like so many days
You fought my desires
And resisted my wants
And challenged me to give up
Not knowing you resented every moment
And hated every time
I asked.

So I gave up
I quit
Asking and begging
And believed I was evil
For even the notion that I wanted to
I gave up on your body
I gave up on your mind
I gave up thinking you were on my side.

All I have now is photographs
And broken memories filled with doubts
Did you ever love me
Did you ever love the way I lived
Did you ever truly want to be a partner in crime
Or was it all a lie
Beneath your bare skin?
