• Greetings! Today I want to tell you about Wapo, "my temporary pet".

Wapo es un Tangara gris-azulejo que mi hermano encontró a la orilla de la calle. Este no podía volar y no parecía moverse. Mi hermano al ver el ave lo tomó entre sus manos y prefirió traerlo a casa que dejarlo a su suerte a las orilas de la calle.

• Wapo is a grey-blue Tangara that my brother found on the side of the road. It could not fly and did not seem to move. When my brother saw the bird he took it in his hands and preferred to bring it home rather than leave it to its fate at the edge of the street.

Al llegar a casa le hicimos una casita improvisada que consistía en una caja de zapatos sin tapa, una tapa de frasco con agua para que bebiera y al lado un poco de alpiste y cambur para que comiera, pero cuando estuvo el pájaro lo suficientemente cerca del suelo saltó de las manos de mi hermano y huyó hacia la esquina de una pared del balcón dándo pequeños saltos. No comió, no bebió agua, no se movió ni emitió algún sonido en todo el día.
Al día siguiente decidió moverse paa "explorar" el balcón. Pero siempre regresaba a su esquina. No comía ni bebía agua y, a pesar de no tenerlo enjaulado y tener las ventanas abiertas, no salía o intentaba salir del departamento.
Al rato comenzó a chillar. No sabíamos por qué lo hacía, hasta que se nos ocurrió la posibilidad de que aquella ave gris-azuleja era todavía un pichón. Confirmamos la teoría cuando agarramos un trozo de cambur, lo hicimos papilla, y le dimos de comer al ave utilizando una inyectadora. Al fin comió y bebió agua. Investigamos un poco sobre el ave y conocimos su dieta. Había que alimentarlo cada hora aproximadamente.

• When we got home we made him a makeshift house consisting of a shoebox without a lid, a jar lid with water for him to drink and next to it some birdseed and cambur for him to eat, but when the bird was close enough to the ground he jumped out of my brother's hands and fled to the corner of a wall of the balcony making little jumps. It did not eat, drink water, move or make a sound all day.
  The next day he decided to move to "explore" the balcony. But he always returned to his corner. He did not eat or drink water and, despite not being caged and having the windows open, he did not leave or try to leave the apartment.
  After a while he started to squeal. We didn't know why he was doing it, until we came up with the possibility that the blue-gray bird was still a chick. We confirmed the theory when we grabbed a chunk of cambur, mashed it into mush, and fed it to the bird using an injector. It finally ate and drank water. We did some research on the bird and learned about its diet. It had to be fed every hour or so.

Al día siguiente mi hermano tuvo que salir y olvidó alimentarlo, así que éramos el ave y yo. Me agradan los animales pero no la idea de tener mascotas o animales e la casa. No sabía en donde habían puesto la inyectadora así que, al no poder alimentarlo como él lo hacía, le puse el cambur en papilla en un viejo plato para que comiera. Para mi sorpresa, el ave aprendió a comer por sí misma. Me sentí feliz al poder ver que podía hacerlo.

• The next day my brother had to go out and forgot to feed him, so it was me and the bird. I like animals but not the idea of having pets or animals in the house. I didn't know where they had put the injector so, not being able to feed him like he did, I put the mush in an old dish for him to eat. To my surprise, the bird learned to eat on its own. I was happy to see that he could do it.

Al día de hoy, lleva casi una semana en casa. Va de lado a lado del balcón, come y bebe por sí mismo, es más activo con el pasar del tiempo y se encariña con nosotros (con mi hermano sobretodo). Aunque siempre tenemos las ventanas abiertas, no ha intentado salir. No sabemos si su intención es irse o quedarse, pero lo cuidaremos mientra permanezca aquí.

• As of today, he has been at home for almost a week. He goes from side to side of the balcony, eats and drinks by himself, is more active as time goes by and gets attached to us (especially my brother). Although we always have the windows open, he has not tried to go out. We don't know if he intends to leave or stay, but we will take care of him as long as he stays here.
